1535 : The SUN DOG phenomenon was observed in the sky over Stockholm, Sweden, which was depicted in the famous painting Vädersolstavlan by Urban målare, which is lost, but a copy painted by Jacob Elbfas in 1636 still exists in Storkyrkan in Stockholm (video). A sun dog is an atmospheric optical phenomenon that creates 1 or 2 bright spots on a halo surrounding the sun.

1770 : Captain James Cook sighted Australia for the first time, at what is now known as Point Hicks in Victoria. The date entered in the log of HMS Endeavour was the 19th April 1770, but during the 2 year journey around the world they skipped a day on the calendar, so according to some sources, Cook arrived in Australia on the 20^th April 1770. Cook’s Endeavour journey was the first European voyage to reach the east coast of Australia.

1906 : SAN FRANCiSCO EARTHQUAKE in California hit with extreme intensity, and killed over 3000 people. Devastating fires also broke out and burnt for days. Over 80% of the city of San Francisco was destroyed.

1861 : American Civil War began, when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay. During the next 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. The civil war finished 4 years later.
