1800s / the 19th century on the 21st of April

1816 : Charlotte Brontë the English novelist and poet was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, England (died in 1855 aged 38). She was the eldest of the three Brontë sisters whose novels became classics of English literature.

1856 : Australian labour movement stonemasons and building workers stopped work and marched from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House to achieve an eight-hour day. Their protest was successful, and they’re noted to be among the first organised workers in the world to achieve the eight-hour day with no loss of pay.
