1915 : LES PAUL the American guitarist and inventor was born Lester William Polsfuss in Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA (died in 2009 aged 94). He is one of the pioneers of the solid-body electric guitar, and his Log prototype, was the inspiration for the creation of the Gibson Les Paul electric guitar. 1928 : Charles Kingsford Smith completed the 1st trans-Pacific flight, in the Southern Cross, a Fokker Trimotor monoplane.

1973 : Secretariat won the U.S. Triple Crown with a spectacular victory at the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first horse since Citation in 1948 to win America’s Triple Crown; the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. Secretariat was ridden by Ron Turcotte, and completed the 1.5-mile race in 2 minutes and 24 seconds, a dirt-track record for that distance.
