1936 : Levi Stubbs the American lead singer of the Four Tops was born Levi Stubbles in Detroit, Michigan, USA (died in 2008 aged 72).

1944 : D-Day : The Allied powers crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, beginning the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control during World War II. Within 3 months, the northern part of France was freed and the invasion force was preparing to enter Germany, where they meet up with Soviet forces moving in from the east.

1955 : Max Meldrum the Scottish-born Australian painter and art teacher died aged 79 (born in 1875).

1956 : Björn Borg the Swedish tennis player was born in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the winner of 11 Grand Slam singles titles, which included 5 consecutive Wimbledon title wins.

1968 : Robert F. Kennedy the American presidential candidate died aged 42, after being assassinated by Sirhan Sirhan, on the previous day. (born in 1925).

1971 : Soyuz 11 was launched from Russia on a mission to hopefully become the only crewed mission to board the world’s first space station, Salyut 1. But the mission ended in disaster when all of the 3 cosmonauts, Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsayev were suffocated by uncontrolled decompression of the capsule during their re-entry 23 days later on 29th June, when they became the only men to have ever died in space.

1976 : J. Paul Getty the American founder of the Getty Oil Company died aged 83 (born in 1892).

2000s / 21st century history on the 6th of June

2002 : A near-Earth asteroid 10 meters approximately in diameter exploded over the Mediterranean Sea between Greece and Libya. The explosion was estimated to have more force than the Nagasaki atomic bomb. It was known as the 2002 Eastern Mediterranean event.

2005 : Anne Bancroft the American actress died aged 73 (born in 1931). She was the winner of the 1963 Academy Award for Best Actress for The Miracle Worker. Anne Bancroft has also won 3 BAFTA Awards, 2 Golden Globe Awards, 2 Tony Awards, and 2 Primetime Emmy Awards. She is 1 of only 24 thespians to be awarded the Triple Crown of Acting.
