1520 : Raphael the Italian painter and architect died on his birthday on Good Friday aged 37 (born in 1483).

1580 : Dover Straits earthquake between England and France was one of the largest earthquakes recorded in the history of England and Northern France.

1869 : Celluloid was patented by John Wesley Hyatt, an American inventor.

1895 : Oscar Wilde was arrested in the Cadogan Hotel, in London.

1896 : Opening of the 1st modern Olympic Games was celebrated in Athens, after 1,500 years since the original games were banned by Roman emperor Theodosius I. King Georgios I of Greece and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed athletes from 13 nations to the international competition opening of the Athens Games.

1992 : Isaac Asimov the American science fiction writer died aged 72 (born in 1920).

1998 : Pakistan tested nuclear missiles capable of reaching India.

1998 : Tammy Wynette the American country music singer died from a blood clot aged 55 (born in 1942).

2000s / the 21st century on the 6th of April

2009 : L’Aquila earthquake in Italy with a 6.3 magnitude, killed 307 people, injured 1,500, and left over 65,000 people homeless.

2014 : Mickey Rooney the American actor died of natural causes which included complications from diabetes. He was 93 years old when he died in Los Angeles (born in New York City in 1920).

2015 : James Best the American actor died aged 88 (born in 1926). He was best known as as the bumbling Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane in The Dukes of Hazzard action-comedy television series, which aired from 1979 to 1985.

2015 : Ray Charles (Charles Raymond Offenberg) the American musician died of cancer aged 96 (born in 1918). He was a singer, songwriter, vocal arranger and conductor.
