1260 : Kublai Khan became the ruler of the Mongol Empire. He was also known as the Emperor Shizu of Yuan, and the grandson of Genghis Khan.

1818 : Karl Marx the German philosopher was born in Trier, Germany (died in 1883 aged 64). He was also a historian, economist, journalist, sociologist, political theorist, and socialist revolutionary. He is best known for The Communist Manifesto in 1848.
1821 : Napoleon the French general and emperor died aged 51 (born in 1769).
1835 : The 1st railway in continental Europe opened in Belgium, between Brussels and Mechelen.
1891 : Tchaikovsky was the guest conductor at the Carnegie Hall opening, originally named The Music Hall in New York City. The grand opening was the hall’s first public performance.

1905 : Fingerprint evidence was used for the first time, to gain a conviction for murder, in the trial of the Stratton Brothers case in London, England.
1942 : Tammy Wynette the American country music singer was born Virginia Wynette Pugh in Tremont, Mississippi, USA (died in 1998 aged 55).
1943 : Sir Michael Palin the English actor was born in Ranmoor, Sheffield, England. He is best known as a member of the Monty Python comedy group, and the travel documentaries he has made since 1980.
1957 : Richard E. Grant the Swazi-English actor was born Richard Grant Esterhuysen in Mbabane, Protectorate of Swaziland.
1958 : Robert DiPierdomenico the Australian footballer was born in Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia.
1959 : STEVE STEVENS the American guitarist in Billy Idol’s band was born Steven Bruce Schneider in New York, New York, United States.
1961 : Alan Shepard became the 1st American to travel into outer space, on a sub-orbital flight.
1964 : May 5 was declared as Europe Day by The Council of Europe.
1972 : Alitalia Flight 112 crashed into Mount Longa near Palermo, Sicily, Italy, resulting in the death of all 115 people onboard. It was the deadliest single-aircraft disaster in Italy.
1973 : Secretariat won the 1973 Kentucky Derby in a record time that has never been beaten again.
1981 : Craig David (MBE) the English musician was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England.
1976 : Dieter Brummer the Australian actor was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
1988 : Adele (MBE) the English singer was born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins in London, England.
2000s / 21st century history on the 5th of May
2007 : Kenya Airways Flight 507 crashed after taking off from Douala International Airport in Douala, Cameroon, Africa, resulting in the death of all 114 onboard. It was the deadliest aircraft disaster in Cameroon.
2010 : Mass protests in Greece erupted in response to the austerity measures that were imposed by the Greek government in response to the government-debt crisis in Greece.
