1600s / 17th century history on the 5th of July
1687 : iSAAC NEWTON published Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica aka PRiNCiPiA, one of the most important works in the history of science. The 3 books written in Latin states Newton’s laws of motion, which formed the foundation of classical mechanics, Newton’s law of universal gravitation, and a derivation of Johannes Kepler’s laws of planetary motion.

1937 : SPAM, the canned cooked pork was introduced into the market by the Hormel Foods Corporation, in Austin, Minnesota, USA. It became popular after its use during World War II, and by the 21st century Spam was sold in 41 countries across 6 continents.
1946 : The 1st modern BiKiNi was modelled, at a swimming pool in Paris, France. French designer Louis Reard unveiled a daring two-piece swimsuit at Piscine Molitor, a popular swimming pool in Paris. Micheline Bernardini, a Parisian showgirl modeled the new fashion, which Louis Reard dubbed bikini, when inspired by the news earlier that week about the U.S. atomic tests at the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.
1948 : The national public health system in the United Kingdom was created by the National Health Service Acts.
1950 : HUEY LEWiS the American singer-songwriter and actor was born Hugh Anthony Cregg III in New York City, USA. He is best known as the lead singer and harmonica player in his band, Huey Lewis and the News. Official website : HueyLewisAndTheNews.com

1954 : ELViS PRESLEY recorded his 1st single, That’s All Right, at Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee, an American independent record label founded by Sam Phillips. That’s All Right was written and originally performed by Arthur Crudup, a blues singer. 1970 : Air Canada Flight 621 crashed in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, due to pilot error, resulting in the deaths of all the 109 people on board.
1971 : The voting age in USA was lowered from 21 to 18 years , with the 26th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which was formally certified by President Richard Nixon.
1975 : Arthur Ashe became the 1st black man to win the Wimbledon singles title.
1980 : BJöRN BORG the Swedish tennis player won his 5th Wimbledon final and becomes the first male tennis player to win the championships five times in a row (1976–1980).
1996 : Dolly the sheep became the 1st mammal to be cloned from an adult cell.
2000s / 21st century history on the 5th of July
2012 : The SHARD in London was inaugurated as the tallest building in Europe*, standing at a height of 310 metres (1,020 ft). The 72-storey skyscraper was designed by Renzo Piano, the Italian architect. *Since 2012 The Shard’s record has been overtaken by 6 taller buildings in Europe. 2016 : The Juno space probe arrived at Jupiter to start a scientific study of the planet.
