1054 : SUPERNOVA SN 1054 stellar explosion was seen by the Chinese Song dynasty, Arab, and possibly Amerindian observers near the star Zeta Tauri. For several months it remained bright enough to be seen during the day. Its remnants form the Crab Nebula.

1776 : United States DECLARATiON of iNDEPENDENCE was adopted by the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Independence Day aka Fourth of July is the national day of the United States, which is associated with fireworks, parades, family reunions, picnics, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, concerts, baseball games, political speeches, and ceremonies.

1958 : KiRK PENGiLLY the Australian musician was born in Kew, Victoria, Australia. He is best known as a member of iNXS rock band, playing saxophone, guitar and singing backing vocals. Official website : inxs.com
1991 : Victor Chang the Chinese-Australian cardiac surgeon died after being shot, aged 54 (born in 1936). He is best known as a pioneer of modern heart transplantation, and the development of an artificial heart valve.

1997 : NASA’s Pathfinder space probe landed on the surface of Mars.
1998 : Japan launched the Nozomi probe to Mars, joining the United States and Russia as a space exploring nation.
2000s / 21st century history on the 4th of July
2001 : Vladivostock Air Flight 352 crashed while it was approaching Irkutsk Airport, in Russia, resulting in the deaths of 145 people on board.
2003 : BARRY WHiTE the American singer-songwriter died aged 58 (born in 1944).
2004 : The cornerstone of the Freedom Tower was laid on the World Trade Center site in New York City.
2006 : Discovery launched STS-121 to the International Space Station, which made it the only shuttle launch on the United States’ Independence Day, in the history of the Space Shuttle program.
2005 : The Deep Impact collider hit the comet Tempel 1.
2012 : The discovery of particles consistent with the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider was announced at CERN.
