1693 : Dom Perignon invented Champagne. This date is traditionally regarded as the day champagne was invented, and Dom Perignon is credited as the innovator for developing the techniques that were used to perfect sparkling wine.

1783 : Mount Asama erupted in Japan, resulting in the deaths of about 1,400 people. The volcano eruption also caused a famine, which subsequently resulted in the deaths of another 20,000 people.

1900 : Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother of the United Kingdom, was born Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon in Hitchin or London, United Kingdom (died in 2002 aged 101).
1901 : Louis Armstrong, the American trumpet player and singer, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA (died in 1971 aged 69).

1914 : Germany invaded Belgium, and in response, Belgium and the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. The United States declared its neutrality, durin World War I.
1944 : Anne Frank, the Jewish diarist, and her family were arrested, when a tip from a Dutch informer led the Gestapo to a sealed-off area in an Amsterdam warehouse, during the Holocaust.
1944 : Richard Belzer, the American actor, was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. He is best known for playing John Munch, in Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, for 23 years, from 1993 to 2016, until he retired in 2016.
1946 : The Dominican Republic earthquake hit northern Dominican Republic, resulting in the deaths of 2,550 people, with 20,000 people left homeless.

1960 : Tim Winton, the Australian award winning writer, was born in Subiaco, Western Australia.
