1147 : Moscow was mentioned for the first time when it was named as a meeting place for two princes, in a historical record.
1400s / the 15th century on the 4th of April
1460 : Basel University was founded in Switzerland.
1500s / the 16th century on the 4th of April
1581 : Francis Drake was knighted for circumnavigating the world.
1800s / the 19th century on the 4th of April
1841 : William Henry Harrison died of pneumonia. He was the first President of the United States to die in office, which set a record for the briefest administration.
1850 : Los Angeles was incorporated as a city, in California, USA.
1873 : The Kennel Club was founded. It is the oldest and first official registry of purebred dogs in the world.

1911 : Max Dupain the Australian photographer was born Maxwell Spencer Dupain in Ashfield, New South Wales, Australia (died in 1992 aged 81).
1913 : Muddy Waters the American singer-songwriter and guitarist was born McKinley Morganfield in Issaquena County, Mississippi, USA (died in 1983 aged 70).
1960 : Hugo Weaving the Nigerian-Australian actor was born in Ibadan, Colonial Nigeria.
1964 : The Beatles held the top 5 positions on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart.
1968 : MARTiN LUTHER KiNG Jr. was assassinated by James Earl Ray at a motel in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. He was fatally shot while standing on the balcony outside his second-story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, just after 6 p.m. on the 4th April 1968. The civil rights leader was in Memphis to support a sanitation workers’ strike and was on his way to dinner when a bullet struck him in the jaw and severed his spinal cord. Martin Luther King Jr. was pronounced dead after his arrival at a Memphis hospital, at the age of 39 (born in 1929).
1968 : NASA launched Apollo 6 in the Apollo Program.
1973 : The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were officially dedicated in New York City.
1975 : Microsoft was founded as a partnership between Bill Gates and Paul Allen, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
1983 : Space Shuttle Challenger mades its maiden voyage into space.
1984 : President Ronald Reagan called for an international ban on chemical weapons. 1995 : Kenny Everett the English comedian died from a human immunodeficiency virus aged 50 (born in 1944).
