1889 : The first long-distance electric power transmission line was completed in the United States, over a distance of 23 kilometres (14 miles), from a generator at Willamette Falls to Portland, Oregon.

1924 : Jimmy Rogers the American singer and guitarist was born in Ruleville, Mississippi, USA (died in 1997 aged 73). He was best known as a member of Muddy Waters.

1962 : Air France Flight 007 exploded after it overrun the runway at Paris Orly Airport, while the crew attempted to abort the take-off, resulting in the death of 130 people.

1965 : Gemini 4 was launched on the first multi-day space mission by NASA. Ed White performed the first American spacewalk during this mission.

1989 : Crackdown at Tiananmen began with protests for democratic reforms entering the 7th week, the Chinese government authorized its soldiers and tanks to reclaim Beijing’s Tiananmen Square at all costs on the 3rd June 1989. By nightfall on the 4th June,  Chinese troops had forcibly cleared the square, killing hundreds and arresting thousands of demonstrators and suspected dissidents.

1991 : Mount Unzen volcano erupted in Kyūshū, Japan, resulting in the death of 43 people, which were researchers and journalists.

1992 : Aboriginal land rights were granted in Australia in the Mabo v Queensland case, which was brought by Eddie Mabo.

1998 : High speed train derailed at Eschede, in Germany, after a mechanical failure, resulting in the death of 101 people.
