1819 : The 1st savings bank in USA, The Bank for Savings opened, in New York City. It merged with the Buffalo Savings Bank 163 years later, in 1982.
1863 : BATTLE of GETTYSBURG after 3 days of fighting in Pennsylvania. Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s last attempt at breaking the Union line ended in a disastrous failure, and brought the most decisive battle of the American Civil War to an end.

1886 : Karl BENZ unveiled the 1st purpose-built AUTOMOBiLE, officially to the public for the very first time, on the Ringstrasse in Mannheim, Germany. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen (patent motorcar), is considered to be the world’s first production automobile, which is a self-propelled vehicle for carrying people. Karl Benz’s three-wheeled automobile with a rear-mounted single-cylinder four-stroke engine : 954 cc (58.2 cu in). 1943 : Kurtwood Smith, the American actor, was born in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, USA. He is best known for playing Red Forman in That ’70s Show, from 1998 to 2006.
1943 : JUDiTH DURHAM (AO) the Australian singer was born in Essendon, Victoria, Australia (died on the 5th August 2022 aged 79). She was best known as the lead singer of The Seekers, from the age of 20, in 1963. The Seekers sold over 50 million records worldwide, Judith Durham was named Victorian of the Year in 2015. 1952 : LAURA BRANiGAN the American singer-songwriter was born in Brewster, New York, USA (died in 2004 aged 52, due to a brain aneurysm). She was best known for her signature hit song, Gloria in 1982, which stayed on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 charts for 36 weeks, which was a record for a female artist at the time. 1970 : Dan-Air Flight 1903 crashed into the Serralada del Montseny mountain range in Catalonia, Spain, resulting in the death of 112 people on board the aircraft, near the village of Arbúcies.
