762 : Baghdad was founded, and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate, which is now modern-day Iraq. The city population of Baghdad is now over 8 million people.

1627 : Gargano earthquake in Italy was a very large severe earthquake, which caused a major tsunami. Approximately 5,000 people were killed.
1800s / 19th century history on the 30th of July
1818 : Emily Brontë, the English novelist and poet was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, England (died in 1848 aged 30). She is best known for writing her only novel, Wuthering Heights, which is one of the classics of English literature.
1859 : The 1st complete ascent of Grand Combin, a mountain massif in the western Pennine Alps in the canton of Valais, in Switzerland. It is one of the highest summits in the Alps, at 4,314 metres (14,154 ft). The ascent was completed by Charles Sainte-Claire Deville with Daniel, Emmanuel and Gaspard Balleys, and Basile Dorsaz. 1863 : HENRY FORD, the American founder of the Ford Motor Company was born in Springwells Township, Michigan, USA (died in 1947 aged 83). He was also the chief developer of the assembly line technique for mass production of automobiles. He is best known for creating the 1st affordable automobile which middle-class Americans could afford, which made a great impact in the 20th century. Official website : Ford.com
1898 : Henry Moore (OM, CH, FBA) the English sculptor and illustration artist, was born in Castleford, West Riding of Yorkshire, in England (died in 1986 aged 88). He is internationally known for creating semi-abstract monumental bronze sculptures, which can be publicly seen around the world.
1900s / 20th century history on the 30th of July
1930 : The 1st FiFA World Cup final was played in Montevideo, in Uruguay, the host country. The Uruguayan team became the first champions, after they defeated Argentina 4 – 2 in the final, with a crowd of 68,346 people watching. Official website : Fifa.com
1932 : Walt Disney’s Flowers and Trees cartoon was released. It was the 1st cartoon short to use Technicolor, and the 1st cartoon short to win an Academy Award.
1936 : Buddy Guy, the American blues guitarist and singer, was born George Guy in Lettsworth, Louisiana, USA. Official website : BuddyGuy.net
1947 : ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, the Austrian-American bodybuilder, actor, and 38th Governor of California was born in Thal, Austria, on the outskirts of Graz, Austria’s 2nd largest city, where people can visit the Arnold Schwarzenegger Museum at his birthplace. 1958 : Kate Bush (CBE) the English singer-songwriter was born Catherine Bush in Bexleyheath, Kent, England. She is best known as the 1st female artist to have a number 1 self-written song in the UK music charts, with Wuthering Heights in 1978. Official website : KateBush.com
1962 : The Trans-Canada Highway, then known as the longest national highway in the world, was officially opened. The transcontinental federal-provincial highway system travels through all of the 10 Canadian provinces, from the west coast to the east coast. The main route is 7,821 kilometres (4,860 miles), and still known as one of the longest routes of its type in the world. 1963 : Lisa Kudrow, the American actress was born in Encino, Los Angeles, California, USA. She is best known for playing Phoebe Buffay in the Friends television sitcom.

1969 : US President Richard Nixon visited South Vietnam, to meet with President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu and U.S. military commanders, during the Vietnam War.
1971 : Apollo 15 landed on the Moon with the 1st Lunar Rover. Commander David Scott and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Falcon near Hadley Rille, a region on the near side of the Moon. They spent 18.5 hours exploring the Moon’s surface, using the Lunar Rover, and collected 77 kilograms (170 pounds) of surface material.
1971 : All Nippon Airways Flight 58 Boeing 727 and a Japanese Air Force F-86 Sabre collided at an altitude of 7,900 metres (26,000 feet) above the Iwate Prefecture, in Japan. The collision was caused by the 22-year-old trainee pilot making an error while practicing air combat manoeuvres in his F-86 Sabre, near Morioka, when his wing struck the Boeing’s left tailplane. The crash resulted in the deaths of 162 people on the Boeing aircraft. The trainee pilot survived using a parachute, after he had to free himself from the F-86 Sabre, when it lost a wing in the collision, and went into a spin, which prevented ejecting from happening.
1974 : Hilary Swank, the American actress, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.
1977 : Jaime Pressly, the American actress, was born in Kinston, North Carolina, USA.
1978 : The 730 : Okinawa Prefecture in Japan switched back from driving on the right-hand side to driving on the left-hand side of the road, after 33 years. Okinawa originally drove on the left-hand side of the road, as the rest of Japan still does, but after the defeat of Japan in World War II, the United States took control of the Okinawa prefecture in 1945, and changed driving to the right-side of the road, as it is in USA.
1980 : Vanuatu gained independence from France and the United Kingdom.
2000s / 21st century history on the 30th of July
2006 : Top of the Pops, the world’s longest running music show was broadcasted for the last time, after 42 years, on the BBC, since it started on the 1st of January in 1964.
2020 : NASA’s Mars 2020 mission was launched from Cape Canaveral, USA, on an Atlas V 541 rocket.
2022 : Archie Roach (AM) the Australian singer-songwriter and Aboriginal activist, died aged 66.
