1500s / 16th century history on the 2nd of March

1561 : MENDOZA, Argentina was founded by Pedro del Castillo, a Spanish conquistador. He named it Ciudad de Mendoza del Nuevo Valle de La Rioja after the governor of Chile.

1600s / 17th century history on the 2nd of March

1657 : The Great Fire of Meirek in Edo (now Tokyo), Japan, burnt for 3 days, and caused over 100,000 deaths.

1700s / 18th century history on the 2nd of March

1717 : The LOVES of MARS and VENUS ballet was first performed in England, which arguably makes it the 1st modern ballet ever performed, which is the telling of a story through dance. The first performance was at London’s Drury Lane Theatre on Saturday 2nd March 1717.

The Loves of Mars and Venus : Baroque dance, music and words brought together to tell the story of the birth of modern ballet in the London of 1717. Choreography and music of the day, with a script by Stephen Wyatt, evoke the magic of early 18th centry theatre.

1791 ~ A semaphore machine was unveiled in Paris, to speed up long-distance communication.

1797 ~ The 1st one-pound and two-pound banknotes were issued by the Bank of England.

1904 : Dr. SEUSS the American author and illustrator was born Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. He was best known as the author and illustrator of The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham children’s books. Dr. Seuss wrote 48 books, including some for adults, selling over 200 million copies. 1931 : MiKHAiL GORBACHEV the former President of the Soviet Union was born in the village of Privolnoye, Stavropol Krai, to a poor peasant family. He he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his leading role in the peace process which continues to characterize important parts of the international community.
