1536 : Buenos Aires in Argentina was founded by Spaniard Pedro de Mendoza, a conquistador (soldier and explorer).

1653 : New Amsterdam was incorporated, later renamed The City of New York. New Amsterdam was established at the southern tip of Manhattan Island as a 17th century Dutch settlement, to serve as the seat of the colonial government in New Netherland.

1709 : Alexander Selkirk was rescued from a desert island where he was shipwrecked, which inspired the Robinson Crusoe  book by Daniel Defoe. Alexander was marooned for 4 years and 4 months on an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean.

1848 : The Mexican – American War Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed.

1876 : The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs of Major League Baseball was formed.

1887 : Groundhog Day was observed for the first time, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

1899 : Australia’s capital city location for Canberra was decided at the Australian Premiers’ Conference in Melbourne. The decision was made to build a new capital city between Sydney and Melbourne.

1901 : The Funeral of Queen Victoria was held in St George’s Chapel, at Windsor Castle, after two days of lying-in-state. She was interred beside Prince Albert in the Royal Mausoleum, Frogmore, at Windsor Great Park. Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years as the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, from 1837 until her death, which was longer than any of her predecessors.

1954 : Christie Brinkley the American actress, model, and businesswoman was born in Monroe, Michigan, USA.

1954 : Hansi Hinterseer the Austrian singer and former skiing champion was born in Kitzbühel, Austria. Hansi was a member of the Austrian ski team, and won 6 alpine skiing World Cup races in the slalom, giant slalom, and the overall giant slalom contest at the 1973 Alpine Skiing World Cup. He also won a silver medal at the 1974 world championship, and raced in the 1976 Winter Olympics at Innsbruck. Hansi is the son of Ernst Hinterseer, winner of a gold medal in slalom skiing at the 1960 Winter Olympics. Since the early 1980s, Hansi has worked as a sports commentator on ski racing live broadcasts. In the 1990’s he started a singing and acting career. 2021 : Captain Sir Tom Moore the British Army officer centenarian died at the age of 100, from Covid-19 and pneumonia in Bedford, England (born in Keighley, England on the 30th April 1920). Captain Tom was popularly known for his philanthropic achievement in raising over £32.79 million for NHS Charities Together, by his 100th birthday, while walking lengths of his garden.
