1904 : Sir Hubert Opperman (OBE) the Australian cyclist known as Oppy was born in Rochester, Victoria, Australia (died in 1996 aged 91).
1914 : Tenzing Norgay the Nepalese-Indian Sherpa mountaineer was born Namgyal Wangdi in Khumbu, Solukhumbu District, Sagarmatha Zone, Nepal (died in 1986 aged 71). On his 39th birthday in 1953, he became one of the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, with Edmund Hillary.
1917 : John F. Kennedy the 35th President of the United States aka JFK was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, USA (died in 1963 aged 46).
1919 : Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity was tested. It was later confirmed by Arthur Eddington and Andrew Claude de la Cherois Crommelin.
1953 : Edmund Hillary & Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Edmund Hillary from New Zealand, and Tenzing Norgay from Nepal, reached the summit of Mount Everest at 11:30am on the 29th May 1953. Mount Everest is 29,035 feet above sea level, and the highest point on Earth.
