1914 : Tenzing Norgay the Nepalese-Indian Sherpa mountaineer was born Namgyal Wangdi in Khumbu, Solukhumbu District, Sagarmatha Zone, Nepal (died in 1986 aged 71). On his 39th birthday in 1953, he became one of the first two people to reach the summit of Mount Everest, with Edmund Hillary.
