1540 : Thomas Cromwell was beheaded on orders of King Henry VIII of England. A charge of treason led to the execution of Thomas Cromwell, an English lawyer and statesman who served King Henry VIII as chief minister for 16 years, from 1534 to 1540.

1741 : Antonio Vivaldi, the Italian violinist and composer, died aged 63 (born in 1678).
1750 : Johann Sebastian Bach, the German composer and musician, died aged 65 (born in 1685).

1866 : BEATRiX POTTER, the English writer and illustrator, was born Helen Beatrix Potter in West Brompton, London, England (died in 1943 aged 77). She is best known for her very popular children’s book series which featuring animals as the characters, such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit. 1866 : Vinnie Ream an American sculptor, aged 18, became the 1st and youngest female artist to be given a commission for a statue, from the United States government. The statue she sculpted was of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, in the U.S. Capitol rotunda, in Washington, D.C.
1887 : Marcel Duchamp, the French-American painter and sculptor, was born Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp in Blainville-Crevon, France (died in 1968 aged 81).
1896 : The city of Miami in Florida, in USA, was officially incorporated, when it had a population of only 300 people, which grew to over 460,000 in 2019.

1902 : ALBERT NAMATJiRA, the Australian painter, was born Elea Namatjira in Hermannsburg Lutheran Mission, South Australia, now known as Northern Territory (died in 1959 aged 57).
1929 : Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the 37th First Lady of the United States, was born Jacqueline Lee Bouvier in Southampton, New York, USA (died in 1994 aged 64).
1907 : Earl Tupper, the American inventor and founder of Tupperware, was born in Berlin, New Hampshire, USA (died in 1983 aged 76).
1935 : The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress made its 1st flight. The heavy bomber with 4 engines was developed for the United States Army Air Corps, to compete against 2 other aircraft companies, Douglas and Martin, for a contract to build 200 bomber planes.
1939 : The Sutton Hoo helmet was discovered. The 1,314 year old Anglo-Saxon helmet was found during an excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship-burial, about 625. The helmet is considered to be the most iconic and important Anglo-Saxon artefact ever discovered.
1943 : RiCHARD WRiGHT, the English musician and singer was born in Hatch End, Middlesex, England (died in 2008 aged 65). He was best known as the keyboard player and a co-founder of the PiNK FLOYD progressive rock band. 1945 : Jim Davis the American cartoonist was born in Marion, Indiana, USA. He is best known as the creator of the Garfield comic strips.
1945 : B-25 aircraft crash into the Empire State Building. A U.S. Army B-25 bomber crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building, resulting in the deaths of 14 people. The crash was due to a pilot taking a wrong turn in zero visibility caused by fog. The damage at the time was approximately US$1 million (worth $14 million in 2020).
1947 : General Sir Peter John Cosgrove (AK, CVO, MC) the 26th Governor General of Australia was born Peter John Cosgrove in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
1956 : Robert Swan (OBE, FRGS) the English explorer was born in Durham, England. He is best known as the 1st person to walk to the North and South Poles.
1957 : Mudslide in Isahaya, Japan, resulted in the deaths of 992 people. Heavy rain caused a landslide and Flood in Nagasaki Prefecture, and Kumamoto Prefecture.
1960 : The Volkswagen Act federal laws were enacted in Germany, in 1960, to regulate the privatisation of Volkswagenwerk GmbH, into the Volkswagen Group.
1964 : Lori Loughlin, the American actress was born in Queens, New York City, USA. She is best known for playing Rebecca Donaldson-Katsopolis aka Aunt Becky on Full House, the ABC sitcom, from 1988 to 1995.
1973 : Summer Jam at Watkins Glen rock festival was attended by 600,000 people at the Watkins Glen International Raceway, in New York, USA, which received the Guinness Book of World Records entry for being the largest audience at a pop festival.
1984 : The summer Olympics were opened in Los Angeles, USA, in the Games of the XXIII Olympiad.
1996 : The prehistoric Kennewick Man skeletal remains were discovered on a bank of the Columbia River, near Kennewick, Washington, USA. It was one of the most complete ancient skeletons ever found, and tests found him to be 8,900 to 9,000 years old.
2000s / 21st century history on the 28th of July
2001 : Ian Thorpe the Australian swimmer became the 1st swimmer to win 6 gold medals at one World Championship meeting.
2010 : Airblue Flight 202 Airbus A321 crashed into mountains near Islamabad, in Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of all 152 people aboard. It was the deadliest aviation accident in Pakistan’s history. It was also the 1st crash in the world involving an Airbus A321.
2017 : Nawaz Sharif the Prime Minister of Pakistan, was disqualified from office for life by Supreme Court of Pakistan, after he was found guilty of corruption charges.
2018 : Wendy Tuck the Australian yachtswoman, became the 1st woman skipper to win a round-the-world yacht race, in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
2021 : Dusty Hill, the American musician died aged 72 (born in 1949). He was best known as the bassist in the ZZ Top rock band. Official website : ZZTop.com
