February 27th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~ 1827: New Orleanians take to the streets for Mardi Gras: A group of masked and costumed students danced through the streets of New Orleans, Louisiana, marking the beginning of the city’s famous Mardi Gras celebrations on the 27th February 1827. Mardi Gras is also known as Fat Tuesday and Carnival Season and Mardi Gras Season, and refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Epiphany or Kings Day and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday.
