1700s / 18th century history on the 26th of July

1739 : George Clinton the 4th Vice President of the United States was born in Little Britain, Province of New York, British America (died in 1812 aged 72).

1745 : The 1st women’s cricket match on record was played, between 2 villages, Bramley versus Hambledon, at Gosden Common, near Guildford, in England. The Hambledon girls defeated the Bramley girls, 127 to 119 notches.

The 1st ever women’s cricket match played near Guildford was reported in The Reading Mercury, which mentioned all the players being dressed in all white, but those from Bramley wore blue ribbons while the Hambledon maids wore red. (HistoryPod YouTube channel video)

1788 : New York ratified the United States Constitution to became the 11th state of the United States.

1800s / 19th century history on the 26th of July

1856 : George Bernard Shaw the Irish playwright and critic was born in Portobello, Dublin, Ireland (died in 1950 aged 94). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925.

1875 : Carl Jung the Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist was born Karl Gustav Jung in Kesswil, Thurgau, Switzerland (died in 1961 aged 85). He founded analytical psychology.

1894 : Aldous Huxley the English writer and philosopher was born in Godalming, Surrey, England (died in 1963 aged 69).

1928 : Stanley Kubrick the American film director was born in the Lying-In Hospital in Manhattan, New York City (died in 1999 aged 70).

1928 : Joe Jackson the American talent manager was born in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, USA (died in 2018 aged 89). He is the father of 11 children, including the internationally known Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, La Toya Jackson, and 8 other children.

1939 : John Howard the 25th Prime Minister of Australia was born in Earlwood, New South Wales, Australia.

1940 : Dobie Gray the American singer and songwriter was born Lawrence Darrow Brown (died in 2011 aged 71). He is best known for his hit song Drift Away in 1973, which sold more than 1 million copies.

1943 : Mick Jagger the English singer and songwriter was born in Dartford, Kent, England. He is best known as the lead singer and co-founder of the Rolling Stones rock band, formed in London, in 1962. Official websites : MickJagger.com | RollingStones.com

1946 : Aloha Airlines started its flight service from Honolulu International Airport.

1949 : Roger Taylor the English singer-songwriter and musician was born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, England. He is best known as the drummer in the rock band Queen, for which he wrote (or co-wrote) various hits including Under Pressure, Radio Ga Ga, A Kind of Magic, and others. 1954 : Vitas Gerulaitis the American tennis player was born in Brooklyn, New York, USA (died in 1994 aged 40). He is best known for winning at Wimbledon in 1975, in the men’s doubles, and winning the Australian Open men’s singles in 1977. Vitas Gerulaitis died from carbon monoxide poisoning when he was 40 years old, due to an improperly installed pool heater, which leaked carbon monoxide gas into the guesthouse where he was sleeping.

1951 : Alice in Wonderland, premiered in London, England. The film premiered in New York City 2 days later on the 28th of July. It was the 13th animated film by Walt Disney.

1958 : Explorer 4 was launched, but remained a secret until made public 6 months later. The Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Projects Agency originally planned for 2 satellites to study the Van Allen radiation belts and the effects of nuclear explosions upon these belts, but Explorer 4 was the only satellite able to be launched successfully. Explorer 5 had a launch failure.

1963 : Syncom 2, the world’s 1st geosynchronous satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, USA. A geosynchronous satellite has an Earth-centered orbit with an orbital period to equal the Earth’s rotation on its axis, for 1 sidereal day (23 hours, 56 minutes & 4 seconds).

1963 : Skopje earthquake in Yugoslavia destroyed 80% of the city, resulting in the deaths of up to 1,100 people. Up to 4,000 people were injured, and over 200,000 people were left homeless.

1971 : Apollo 15 was launched on the 1st Apollo J-Mission, which included the 1st use of a Lunar Roving Vehicle.

1972 : Nathan Buckley the Australian footballer and coach was born in Adelaide, South Australia.

1973 : Kate Beckinsale the English actress was born Kathrin Romary Beckinsale in London, England.

1980 : Jacinda Ardern the 40th Prime Minister of New Zealand was born in Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand.

1989 : The 1st person was prosecuted under the 1986 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, when a federal grand jury indicted Robert T. Morris, Jr., a Cornell University student, who released the Morris worm.

1990 : The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 civil rights law was signed into law by President George H.W. Bush. The civil rights law prohibits discrimination based on disability, which made it illegal to discriminate people based on their race, religion, sex, national origin, and any other characteristics, and later sexual orientation.

1993 : Asiana Airlines Flight 733 Boeing 737 crashed into a ridge on Mt. Ungeo, at 240 metres (800 feet) while on its 3rd attempt to land at Mokpo Airport, in South Korea, due to heavy rain and wind. The crash resulted in the deaths of 68 of the 116 people onboard  the aircraft.

2000s / 21st century history on the 26th of July

2005 : STS-114 Mission launch of Discovery, was NASA’s 1st scheduled flight mission since the Columbia Disaster, 29 months earlier, in 2003.

2005 : Maharashtra floods in Mumbai, India started after 99.5cm of rain (39.17 inches) fell within a 24 hour period, which resulted in floods that caused the deaths of over 1,000 people.

2011 : Margaret Olley (AC) the Australian painter died aged 88 (born in 1923). In her lifetime she had over 90 solo exhibitions, featuring her still life paintings. Her philanthropy included donating over 130 paintings worth a total of $7 million.

2016 : Solar Impulse 2 became the 1st solar-powered aircraft to circumnavigate the Earth. The Swiss long-range experimental solar-powered aircraft project was led by André Borschberg a Swiss engineer, and Bertrand Piccard a Swiss psychiatrist and balloonist, who both co-piloted the 1st balloon to circle the world non-stop, know as the Breitling Orbiter 3.

2020 : Dame Olivia de Havilland (DBE) the American actress died aged 104 (born in 1916).
