SEPTEMBER 25th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~ 1957 : Central High School integrated  | & more about history on this day in the video… Nine black students entered the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, under escort from the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division. Three weeks earlier, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus surrounded the school with National Guard troops to prevent its federal court-ordered racial integration.

1513 ~ Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa reached what was later known as the Pacific Ocean.

1690 ~ Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick, the 1st newspaper to appear in the Americas, was published for the first and only time.

1789 ~ The United States Congress passed 12 amendments to the United States Constitution, which included the Congressional Apportionment Amendment (never ratified), the Congressional Compensation Amendment, and the 10 known as the Bill of Rights.

1790 ~ Peking opera was born when the Four Great Anhui Troupes introduced Anhui opera to Beijing in honor of the Qianlong Emperor’s 8th birthday.

1890 ~ The United States Congress established Sequoia National Park. The park is well known for the giant sequoia trees, including the General Sherman tree, one of the largest trees on Earth.

1912 ~ Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism was founded in New York City.

1926 ~ The international Convention to Suppress the Slave Trade and Slavery is first signed.

1929 ~ Jimmy Doolittle performed the first blind flight from Mitchel Field, which proved full instrument flying from take off to landing was possible.

1956 ~ TAT-1, the 1st submarine transatlantic telephone cable system was inaugurated.

1957 ~ Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, was integrated by the use of United States Army troops.

1969 ~ The charter establishing the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation was signed.

1978 ~ PSA Flight 182, a Boeing 727-214 collided in flight with a Cessna 172, and crashed in San Diego, killing 144 people.

1981 ~ Belize joined the United Nations.

1983 ~ The Maze Prison escape became the largest prison escape since WWII and in British history, when 38 republican prisoners, armed with 6 handguns, hijacked a prison meals truck and smashed their way out of Maze Prison.

1992 ~ NASA launched the Mars Observer, a probe to Mars, in the first U.S. mission to the planet in 17 years. Eleven months later, the $511 million probe would fail.

2008 ~ China launched the spacecraft Shenzhou 7.
