1600s / 17th century history on the 25th of July

1668 : Shandong earthquake hit China and killed more than 40,000 people. The aftershocks continued for 6 years.

1700s / 18th century history on the 25th of July

1788 : Symphony No. 40 in G minor was completed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is also known as the Great G minor symphony, and is 1 of only 2 extant minor key symphonies Mozart wrote.

1799 : Napoleon Bonaparte defeated the Ottoman army in the Battle of Abukir during the French campaign in Egypt, although Napoleon was outnumbered with his 7,700 men against the Ottoman army of over 18,000 soldiers.    

1800s / 19th century history on the 25th of July

1837 : The electrical telegraph was used for commercial use for the first time, when it was successfully demonstrated by William Cooke and Charles Wheatstone, in London, England.

1868 : The Wyoming Territory was established, in the United States, until 22 years later in 1890 when it was admitted to the Union as the State of Wyoming.

1900s / 20th century history on the 25th of July

1909 : Louis Blériot made the 1st airplane flight across the English Channel, and won £1,000 offered by the Daily Mail newspaper.

1917 : Income tax was introduced in Canada by Sir Robert Borden as a temporary measure. The income tax rates ranged from 4% to 25%.

1923 : Estelle Getty the American actress was born Estelle Scher in New York City, USA (died in 2008 aged 84). She was best known for playing Sophia Petrillo in The Golden Girls television series from 1985 to 1992, for which she won acting awards.

1932 : Paul J. Weitz the American astronaut was born in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA (died in 2017 aged 85).

1942 : Bruce Woodley (AO) the Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. He is best known as a founding member of The Seekers folk pop quartet. Official website : TheSeekers.com.au

1965 : Bob Dylan performed his first electric set when headlining the Newport Folk Festival. This was the first time he had gone electric since high school.

1967 : Matt LeBlanc the American actor was born in Newton, Massachusetts, USA. He is best known for playing Joey in the Friends television sitcom series from 1994 to 2004.

1973 : Soviet Mars 5 space probe was launched, and reached Mars on the 12th of February in 1974.

1984 : Svetlana Savitskaya the Soviet cosmonaut became the 1st woman to perform a space walk, while on Salyut 7 space station.

2000s / 21st century history on the 25th of July

2000 : Concorde Air France Flight 4590 crashed during takeoff at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, in France. The crash was caused when the aircraft ran over debris on the runway, followed by a tyre blowout, which led to debris hitting the wing, severing power wire, which created a fire, making it uncontrollable for the pilots. The Concorde crashed into a hotel in Gonesse 2 minutes after takeoff. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 109 people onboard, plus deaths of 4 people in the hotel.

2007 : Pratibha Patil was sworn in as India’s 1st female president. She served as the 12th President of India from 2007 to 2012.

2010 : WikiLeaks published the classified documents about the War in Afghanistan, known as the Afghan War documents leak, or the Afghan War Diary. The leak is one of the largest leaks in U.S. military history.
