1641 ~ The Merchant Royal was lost at sea off Land’s End, carrying a treasure worth more than a billion US dollars.

1846 ~ Astronomers Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier, John Couch Adams and Johann Gottfried Galle collaborated on the discovery of Neptune.

1889 ~ Nintendo Koppai was founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi to produce and market the playing card game Hanafuda. Nintendo Koppai later became Nintendo Company, Limited.

1908 ~ University of Alberta in Alberta, Canada, was founded.

1909 ~ The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l’Opéra) novel by Gaston Leroux was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois.

1913 ~ Roland Garros of France became the first to fly in an airplane across the Mediterranean, from St. Raphael, France to Bizerte, Tunisia.

1936 ~ Siniolchu’s summit was first climbed by the German climbers Karl Wien and Adi Göttner. Siniolchu is one of the tallest mountains of the Indian state of Sikkim.
