1556 : Shaanxi earthquake hit the Shaanxi province in China, killing approximately 830,000 people. It was the deadliest earthquake in history.
1571 – The Royal Exchange opened in London on this day.
1719 – The Principality of Liechtenstein was created within the Holy Roman Empire.
1846 – Slavery in Tunisia was abolished on this day.
1904 – Ålesund Fire left 10,000 people homeless in the Norwegian coastal town of Ålesund, Norway. Only one person died. Kaiser Wilhelm II funded the rebuilding of the town.
1912 – The International Opium Convention was signed at The Hague on this day.
1948 : Glenn Wheatley, the Australian musician and manager, was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (died in 2022 aged 74). He first became famous as the bass guitarist in the Masters Apprentices.
1950 – The Knesset resolved that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.
1957 – Walter Frederick Morrison the American inventor of the flying disc sold the rights to the Wham-O toy company, which later renamed it the Frisbee.
1986 – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted the first members: Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, James Brown, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Sam Cooke, and The Everly Brothers.
1997 – Madeleine Albright became the first woman to serve as United States Secretary of State on this day.
1998 – Netscape announced Mozilla software would be for free, and the open source code would also be free.
2003 – Pioneer 10’s very weak signal was detected for the last time, but no usable data could be extracted.
2018 – The Gulf of Alaska 7.9 Mw earthquake occurred, and became the 6th largest earthquake ever recorded in USA. There are no reports of major damage or deaths.
