1788 : Great New Orleans Fire destroyed 856 of 1,100 structures in New Orleans in Louisiana, USA.

1804 : Napoléonic Code was adopted as French civil law.

1871: Journalist Henry Morton Stanley began his famous search through Africa for the missing British explorer Dr. David Livingstone, one of England’s most intrepid explorers that increased Africa’s fame. In 1865, Livingstone set out on a planned two-year expedition to find the source of the Nile River, and also wanted to help bring about the abolition of the slave trade, which was devastating Africa’s population.

1928 : Charles Lindbergh was presented with the Medal of Honor for the first solo trans-Atlantic flight.

1950 : Roger Hodgson the English musician was born Charles Roger Pomfret Hodgson in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. He is best known as the former lead singer of Supertamp. Roger composed and sang most of Supertramp’s hits such as Dreamer, It’s Raining Again, Breakfast in America, Take the Long Way Home, The Logical Song, and Give a Little Bit.

1952 : 1st rock & roll concert in the world : Moondog Coronation Ball, was presented by disc jockey Alan Freed in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.

1960 : Ayrton Senna the Brazilian race car driver was born Ayrton Senna da Silva in São Paulo, Brazil. He died in 1994 aged 34, after fatal injuries from an accident during the San Marino Grand Prix, on 1 May 1994.

1965 : NASA launched Ranger 9, the last of a series of their unmanned lunar space probes.

1999 : Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones became the first to circumnavigate the Earth in a hot air balloon.
