1975 : JAWS the thriller film was released in the United States. It was the first film to be known as a “summer blockbuster”, and was the highest-grossing film of its time. The film budget was $9 million, and it took $472 million at the box office. The film was based on Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel, and directed by Steven Spielberg. The story is about a great white shark that terrorized a New England resort town. It was the highest-grossing film in movie history, until it was beaten by Star Wars 2 years later, in 1977. Jaws was nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Picture category and won 3 Oscars, for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound. The film was a breakthrough for 27 year old director Steven Spielberg, and spawned 3 sequels.
