1500s / 16th century history on the 1st of March

1565 : RiO de JANEiRO was founded by Estácio de Sá, a Portuguese officer, and named São Sebastião (Rio de Janeiro), in honour of St. Sebastian. Estácio de Sá went to the colony of Brazil on the orders of the Portuguese crown to wage war on the French colonists.

1600s / 17th century history on the 1st of March

1692 : The SALEM WiTCH TRiALS began when Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne and Tituba were brought before local magistrates in Salem Village, Massachusetts, in USA, accused of witchcraft. Over 200 people were accused of witchcraft from 1692 to 1693, with 30 found guilty, resulting in 19 executions by hanging.

1700s / 18th century history on the 1st of March

1790 ~ The first United States census was authorized.

1796 ~ The Dutch East India Company was nationalized by the Batavian Republic.

1815 ~ Napoleon returned to France from his banishment on Elba.

1867 ~ Nebraska became the 37th U.S. state. Lancaster, Nebraska was renamed Lincoln and became the state capital.

1869 ~ Dmitri Mendeleev finished his design of the 1st periodic table and sent it to be published.

1872 ~ Yellowstone National Park was established as the world’s 1st national park.

1873 : Production of the 1st practical typewriter was started by E. Remington and Sons in Ilion, New York.

1881 ~ The 1st Minnesota State Capitol was destroyed by fire.

1893 ~ Nikola Tesla the electrical engineer gave the 1st public demonstration of radio, in St. Louis, Missouri.

1896 ~ Henri Becquerel discovered radioactive decay.

1901 ~ The Australian Army was formed, with the amalgamation of the 6 separate colonial military forces.

1904 : GLENN MiLLER the American trombonist was born in Clarinda, Iowa, USA. He was also a composer, arranger, and bandleader. Glenn Millar disappeared while flying over the English Channel in 1944 at the age of 40.

1910 ~ The worst avalanche in USA history buried a Great Northern Railway train in northeastern King County, Washington, and killed 96 people.

1910 : DAViD NiVEN the English actor was born in Belgravia, London, England (died in 1983 aged 73).

1914 ~ The Republic of China joined the Universal Postal Union.

1917 ~ The Zimmermann Telegram was reprinted in newspapers across USA after the government released its unencrypted text.

1921 ~ The Australian cricket team became the 1st team to complete a whitewash of The Ashes, and wasn’t repeated until 86 years later. The team was captained by Warwick Armstrong.

1927 : HARRY BELAFONTE the American singer was born in Harlem, New York, USA. He is known as the “King of Calypso”, and is also a songwriter, actor, and activist. Harry is best known for “The Banana Boat Song (aka Day-O)” and “Jamaica Farewell”, both very popular songs in 1956.

1932 ~ Charles Lindbergh’s son was kidnapped. Charles Lindbergh III, the 20-month-old son of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, was kidnapped from the family’s new mansion in Hopewell, New Jersey on the 1st March 1932. Lindbergh was well known making  the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927. His wife Anne discovered a ransom note demanding $50,000 in their son’s empty room. The kidnapper used a ladder to climb up to the open second-floor window, leaving muddy footprints in the room.

1936 ~ The Hoover Dam was completed, in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, between the border of Nevada and Arizona, USA.

1944 : ROGER DALTREY the English singer was born in East Acton, London. He is best known as the lead singer of The Who rock band, formed in 1964. Roger is also a songwriter, film producer, and actor.

1946 ~ The Bank of England was nationalised.

1947 : ALAN THiCKE the Canadian-American actor was born in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Canada (died in 2016 aged 69). He was best known as Dr. Jason Seaver on Growing Pains, a 1980s sitcom. Alan Thicke was also a songwriter, television host, and father of Robin Thicke the singer.

1947 ~ The International Monetary Fund began financial operations.

1952 : LEiGH MATTHEWS the Australian footballer was born in Frankston, Victoria. He played for Hawthorn Football Club, and coached Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions. Leigh is also known as “Lethal Leigh” and is officially recognized by the AFL as the “best player of the 20th century” and legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Now he is an AFL commentator on television and radio.

1954 ~ The Castle Bravo 15-megaton hydrogen bomb was detonated on Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean, during nuclear weapons testing, causing the worst radioactive contamination caused by USA.

1954 : RON HOWARD the American actor and director was born in Duncan Oklahoma, USA. He is best known as Richie Cunningham in Happy Days, the 1970s sitcom.

1956 ~ The Radiotelephony spelling alphabet final draft for the International Civil Aviation Organization was completed for the International Air Transport Association.

1964 ~ Villarrica Volcano began a strombolian eruption, which caused lahars that destroyed half of the town of Coñaripe.

1966 ~ Venera 3 Soviet space probe crashed on Venus, and became the 1st spacecraft to land on another planet’s surface.

1987 : KESHA the American singer was born Kesha Rose Sebert in Los Angeles, California, USA. She is a rap singer, songwriter and actress. Kesha is best known for her first release which became her biggest hit “Tik Tok” in 2009, which was number 1 on the charts in America, Australia, Austria, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Switzerland, + no.3 in Ireland, & no.4 in Belgium and England. 2002 ~ U.S. invasion of Afghanistan began with the start of Operation Anaconda in eastern Afghanistan.

2002 ~ The Envisat environmental satellite successfully reached an orbit 800 kilometers (500 miles) above the Earth on the 11th launch, while carrying the heaviest payload recorded, 8500 kilograms (8.5 tons).

2003 ~ The International Criminal Court held the  inaugural session in The Hague.

2005 ~ Roper v. Simmons in the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the execution of juveniles found guilty of murder as unconstitutional.

2006 ~ Wikipedia uploaded the 1 millionth article. The page was about Jordanhill railway station.

2007 ~ Tornadoes across the southern United States killed approximately 20 people, including 8 at Enterprise High School.

2021 : MiCHAEL GUDiNSKi the Australian music entrepreneur died at the age of 68. He was born in Caulfield, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1952. Michael was best known as the founder of Mushroom Records, which formed in 1972, and signed Skyhooks, The Choirboys, Kylie Minogue, Split Enz, Eskimo Joe, Evermore, and many others.
