1700s / the 18th century on the 19th of April

1770 : Captain James Cook sighted Australia for the first time, at what is now known as Point Hicks in Victoria. The date entered in the log of HMS Endeavour was the 19th April 1770, but during the 2 year journey around the world they skipped a day on the calendar, so according to some sources, Cook arrived in Australia on the 20th April 1770. Cook’s Endeavour journey was the first European voyage to reach the east coast of Australia.

1770 : Marie Antoinette married Louis XVI of France in a proxy wedding.

1900s / the 20th century on the 19th of April

1927 : Mae West was sentenced to 10 days in jail for obscenity for her play “Sex”.

1933 : Jayne Mansfield the American actress was born Vera Jayne Palmer in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA (died in 1967 aged 34).

1935 : Dudley Moore the English actor and comedian was born in Charing Cross, London, England (died in 2002 aged 66).

1943 : Albert Hofmann dosed himself with LSD for the first time, 3 days after he discovered the effects of LSD on the 16th April, which is now known as Bicycle Day.

1956 : Grace Kelly the American actress married Prince Rainier of Monaco.

1971 : Salyut 1 the 1st space station was launched.

1971 : Charles Manson was sentenced to death, but it was later commuted to a life imprisonment, for conspiracy in the Tate–LaBianca murders.

1975 : Aryabhata India’s 1st satellite was launched in orbit, from Kapustin Yar, in Russia.

1984 : Advance Australia Fair was proclaimed as Australia’s national anthem, and green and gold were proclaimed as the national colours.

2000s / the 21st century on the 19th of April

2000 : Air Philippines Flight 541 crashed and killed 131 people on board, in Samal, Davao del Norte, Philippines.

2011 : Fidel Castro resigned as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba after holding the title for 50 years, since 1961.

2021 : The first flight on another planet in history was achieved by Ingenuity helicopter on Mars.
