April 19th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~ 1897 : The 1st Boston Marathon was held : John J. McDermott of New York won the 1st Boston Marathon with a time of 2:55:10 on the 19th April 1897. The Boston Marathon was the idea of Boston Athletic Association member and inaugural U.S. Olympic team manager John Graham, who was inspired by the marathon at the 1st modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece in 1896. With the assistance of Boston businessman Herbert H. Holton, a measured distance of 24.5 miles from the Irvington Oval in Boston to Metcalf’s Mill in Ashland was eventually selected from various other routes considered. | & more about history on this day in the video…
