5th century on the 17th of March

461 A.D : SAiNT PATRiCK the Christian missionary died aged 76, at Saul, Dál Fiatach, Ulaid, Gaelic Ireland (now known as Northern Ireland). He was a Romano-British Christian missionary and Bishop in Ireland. Saint Patrick’s legendary life was recorded in the Confessio, a book he wrote during his last years. Saint Patrick is known as the “Apostle of Ireland”, he is the primary patron saint of the island. Saint Patrick’s Day is observed on the 17th March, the date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday.

1800s / the 19th century on the 17th of March

1861 : The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed.

1900s / the 20th century on the 17th of March

1919 : Nat King Cole the American singer and pianist was born Nathaniel Coles in Montgomery, Alabama, USA (died in 1965 aged 45).

1958 : The 1st solar-powered satellite was launched by the United States. It was also the first satellite to achieve a long-term orbit.

1963 : Mount Agung erupted in Bali, and killed over 1,100 people.

1964 : Rob Lowe the American actor and producer was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA.

1969 : Golda Meir became the first female Prime Minister of Israel.

1973 : “Burst of Joy” Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph was taken, which depicted a former prisoner of war being reunited with his family. The photo symbolized the end of United States involvement in the Vietnam War.

1988 : Colombian Boeing 727 Avianca Flight 410 jetliner crashed into a mountain near the Venezuelan border, resulting in the death of 143 people.
