1700s / the 18th century on the 16th of March

1774 : Matthew Flinders the English navigator was born in Donington, Lincolnshire, England (died in 1814 aged 40). He was also a cartographer best known for the first inshore circumnavigation of the landmass now known as Australia.

1792 : King Gustav III of Sweden was shot, and died 13 days later on the 29th March.

1800s / the 19th century on the 16th of March

1802: The United States Military Academy was founded by Congress, for educating and training young men in the theory and practice of military science. It was the 1st military school in the United States, and is located at West Point, New York, and is often referred to as West Point.

1898 : The Commonwealth of Australia constitution was adopted In Melbourne by the representatives of five colonies.

1900s / the 20th century on the 16th of March

1926 : Jerry Lewis the American comedian was born Joseph Levitch in Newark, New Jersey, USA (died in 2017 aged 91).

1926 : The first liquid-fueled rocket was launched, by Robert Goddard, at Auburn, Massachusetts, USA.

1945 : Würzburg city in Germany was 90% destroyed by British bombers in 20 minutes, resulting in the death of 5,000 people (approximately).

1962 : Flying Tiger Line Super Constellation airline disappeared in the western Pacific Ocean, with 107 people reported missing (presumed dead).

1966 : Gemini 8 spaceflight was launched, as the 12th manned American space flight, and the first space docking with an Agena Target Vehicle (uncrewed spacecraft).

1978 : Aldo Moro the former Italian Prime Minister was kidnapped, but was later murdered by his captors.

1978 : Balkan Bulgarian Airlines Tupolev Tu-134 crashed near Gabare in Bulgaria, resulting in the death of 73 people.

2000s / the 21st century on the 16th of March

2016 : Frank Sinatra Jr. the son of Frank Sinatra died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest while on tour in Daytona Beach, Florida, aged 72. (born in 1944). Francis Wayne Sinatra was a a singer, actor and conductor.

2020 : The Dow Jones Industrial Average largest point drop in history, fell by 2,997.10, with a 12.93% drop, resulting in the second-largest percentage drop ever. It was a greater crash than Black Monday in 1929.

Dow logs biggest point-drop in history as stocks tumble :The Dow recorded a new worst point drop on record, overtaking the massive loss from 27th February. The index closed down 2,014 points, or 7.8%. It was its worst day since October 2008. When the S&P 500 dropped 7% it triggered a circuit breaker, which forced the New York Stock Exchange to suspend trading for 15 minutes. (CNN verified video)
