1889 : Charlie Chaplin the English comic actor was born in Walworth, London, England (died in 1977 aged 88).

1908 : Natural Bridges National Monument was established in Utah.
1912 : Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly an airplane across the English Channel.
1918 : Spike Milligan the British-Irish actor was born in Ahmednagar, British India (died in 2002 aged 83). He is best known as the co-creator, main writer and main cast member of the The Goon Show.
1921 : Peter Ustinov the English actor was born in London, England (died in 2004 aged 82).
1924 : Henry Mancini the American composer was born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA (died in 1994 aged 70).
1939 : Dusty Springfield the English singer was born in West Hampstead, London, United Kingdom (died in 1999).
1943 : Hallucinogenic effects of LSD discovered by Albert Hoffman the Swiss chemist working at the Sandoz pharmaceutical research laboratory in Basel, Switzerland, when he accidentally consumed LSD-25. LSD-25 is a synthetic drug he had created in 1938 as part of his research into the medicinal value of lysergic acid compounds.
1947 : Gerry Rafferty the Scottish singer-songwriter was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland (died in 2011 aged 63).
1950 : Colleen Hewett the Australian singer and actress was born in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.
1953 : Peter Garrett the Australian lead singer of Midnight Oil was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
1972 : Apollo 16 was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA.
