1912 : Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly an airplane across the English Channel.

1918 : Spike Milligan the British-Irish actor was born in Ahmednagar, British India (died in 2002 aged 83). He is best known as the co-creator, main writer and main cast member of the The Goon Show.

1943 : Hallucinogenic effects of LSD discovered by Albert Hoffman the Swiss chemist working at the Sandoz pharmaceutical research laboratory in Basel, Switzerland, when he accidentally consumed LSD-25. LSD-25 is a synthetic drug he had created in 1938 as part of his research into the medicinal value of lysergic acid compounds.
