44 BC : JULiUS CAESAR the Roman dictator was assassinated by a group of senators during a meeting of the Senate at the Theatre of Pompey in Rome, on the Ides of March (74th day in the Roman Calendar). Caesar was 55 years old when he died.

1700s / the 18th century on the 15th of March

1779 : William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, and English Prime Minister was born in London, England (died in 1848 aged 69). Melbourne, the capital city of Victoria in Australia, was named in his honour in 1837.

1800s / the 19th century on the 15th of March

1877 : First ever official cricket test match was played. The match was Australia vs England at the MCG Stadium, in Melbourne, Australia.

1900s / the 20th century on the 15th of March

1947 : Ry Cooder the American musician was born in Los Angeles, California, USA. He is singer-songwriter, film score composer, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, and best known for playing slide guitar.

1955 : Dee Snider the lead singer of twisted Singer was born Daniel Snider in Astoria, Queens, New York City, USA. He is also a songwriter, musician, radio personality, and actor.

1962 : Terence Trent D’Arby the American singer-songwriter was born Sananda Maitreya in Manhattan, New York, USA.

1965: President Lyndon B. Johnson advocated the Voting Rights Act when he addressed a joint session of Congress to urge the passage of legislation guaranteeing voting rights for all. Using the phrase “we shall overcome,” borrowed from African-American leaders struggling for equal rights, he declared that “every American citizen must have an equal right to vote.” He reminded the nation that the Fifteenth Amendment (passed after the Civil War) gave all citizens the right to vote regardless of race or colour. But states had defied the Constitution and erected barriers. Discrimination had taken the form of literacy, knowledge or character tests administered solely to African-Americans to keep them from registering to vote.

1975 : Eva Longoria the American actress was born Eva Jacqueline Longoria Bastón in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA.

1975 : will.i.am the American rap singer was born William Adams in Eastside Los Angeles, California, USA. He is the founder and lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas. Will.i.am is also a songwriter, record producer, entrepreneur, television personality and actor.

1990 : Mikhail Gorbachev was elected as the first President of the Soviet Union.

2000s / the 21st century on the 15th of March

2019 : The Christchurch mosque shootings in New Zealand resulted in the death of 51 people.
