1817 : Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc founded the American School for the Deaf, in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. It was the first American school for deaf students.

1912 : RMS TiTANiC sank in the North Atlantic Ocean at 2:20 am, after hitting an iceberg, 2 hours and 40 minutes earlier.  an iceberg. More than 1,500 people died of the 2,224 passengers and crew on board, resulting in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

1947: JACKiE ROBiNSON broke the color barrier when he became the first African-American player in Major League Baseball when he stepped onto Ebbets Field in Brooklyn to compete for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The sport had been colour segregated for over 50 years, until Robinson’s groundbreaking career was honored exactly 50 years later. 1952 : Kym Gyngell the Australian actor was born in Melbourne, Australia. He is best known as Colin Carpenter on The Comedy Company from 1988 to 1990.

1955 : Dodi Fayed the Egyptian film producer was born Emad El-Din Mohamed Abdel Mena’em Fayed in Alexandria, Egypt (died in 1997 aged 42). He was best known as the romantic partner of Diana, Princess of Wales, after they both died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.

1959 : Emma Thompson the English actress was born in Paddington, London, England.

1966 : Samantha Fox the English singer was born in Mile End, London, England.

1980 : Jean-Paul Sartre the French philosopher died aged 74 (born in 1905). He was also a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, biographer, literary critic, and political activist. Jean-Paul Sartre was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature although he attempted to refuse it.

1989 : The Tiananmen Square Massacre in China began after protests upon the death of Hu Yaobang, a high-ranking official of the People’s Republic of China. The death toll varies from hundreds to thousands, with thousands more wounded when troops armed with assault rifles and accompanied by tanks fired at the protesters trying to block the military’s advance into Tiananmen Square.
