1452 : LEONARDO da ViNCi the Italian polymath was born in Anchiano, Vinci, Republic of Florence in present-day Italy (died in 1519 aged 67). Leonardo was a painter, sculptor, architect, draughtsman, theorist, engineer and scientist during the High Renaissance.

1755 : Samuel Johnson’s A Dictionary of the English Language was published in London.

1817 : Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc founded the American School for the Deaf, in Hartford, Connecticut, USA. It was the first American school for deaf students.
1865 : President Abraham Lincoln died aged 56, after being shot by actor John Wilkes Booth at a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C., USA., on the previous day (14th April).

1900s / the 20th century on the 15th of April
1912 : RMS TiTANiC sank in the North Atlantic Ocean at 2:20 am, after hitting an iceberg, 2 hours and 40 minutes earlier. an iceberg. More than 1,500 people died of the 2,224 passengers and crew on board, resulting in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.
1923 : Insulin for diabetes became generally available.
1944 : Dave Edmunds the Welsh musician was born in Cardiff, Wales.
1947: JACKiE ROBiNSON broke the color barrier when he became the first African-American player in Major League Baseball when he stepped onto Ebbets Field in Brooklyn to compete for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The sport had been colour segregated for over 50 years, until Robinson’s groundbreaking career was honored exactly 50 years later. Jackie Robinson number 42 was the first-ever number retired by all teams in the league.

1952 : Kym Gyngell the Australian actor was born in Melbourne, Australia. He is best known as Colin Carpenter on The Comedy Company from 1988 to 1990.
1955 : The 1st McDonald’s restaurant franchise was opened by Ray Kroc, in Des Plaines, Illinois, USA.
1955 : Dodi Fayed the Egyptian film producer was born Emad El-Din Mohamed Abdel Mena’em Fayed in Alexandria, Egypt (died in 1997 aged 42). He was best known as the romantic partner of Diana, Princess of Wales, after they both died in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
1959 : Emma Thompson the English actress was born in Paddington, London, England.
1966 : Samantha Fox the English singer was born in Mile End, London, England.
1980 : Jean-Paul Sartre the French philosopher died aged 74 (born in 1905). He was also a novelist, playwright, screenwriter, biographer, literary critic, and political activist. Jean-Paul Sartre was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature although he attempted to refuse it.
1989 : Hillsborough human crush disaster caused 96 deaths of Liverpool fans, at Hillsborough Stadium, in the FA Cup Semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. Hillsborough Stadium , is the home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.
1989 : The Tiananmen Square Massacre in China began after protests upon the death of Hu Yaobang, a high-ranking official of the People’s Republic of China. The death toll varies from hundreds to thousands, with thousands more wounded when troops armed with assault rifles and accompanied by tanks fired at the protesters trying to block the military’s advance into Tiananmen Square.
1990 : Emma Watson the English actress was born in Paris, France, and raised in Oxfordshire, South East England. She is also a model and activist. Emma Watson is best known as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series from 2001 to 2011.
1998 : Pol Pot the Cambodian general and 29th Prime Minister of Cambodia died aged 72 (born in 1925).
2000s / the 21st century on the 15th of April
2002 : Air China Flight 129 crashed while approaching Gimhae International Airport in Busan, South Korea, resulting in the death of 129 people.
2017 : Emma Morano the Italian supercentenarian died aged 117, as the world’s oldest living person (born in 1899). She was the last person verified born in the 1800s.
2019 : The cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris in France was seriously damaged by fire.
