1700s / 18th century history on the 14th of July

1789 : Storming of the Bastille in Paris, France. Revolutionaries stormed The Bastille, a royal fortress and prison which signalled the beginning of the French Revolution. There were up to 1,000 armed civilian insurgents, 61 French Guards, and 5 artillery pieces, against the Royal government of 114 soldiers. The Insurgents claimed victory with the capture of Bastille. During the fight, 98 civilian insurgents were killed, and 1 soldier killed. Bastille Day became a national celebration in France, which has been celebrated annually on the 14th of July since the historic event.

1862 : Gustav Klimt the Austrian painter was born in Baumgarten, Austrian Empire (died in 1918 aged 55).

1865 : The 1st ascent of the Matterhorn, in Switzerland, was completed by Edward Whymper, with 7 others, of which 4 died on the descent.

1874 : The Chicago Fire of 1874 destroyed 47 acres of the city, which included 812 buildings, resulting in the deaths of 20 people.

1881 : Billy the Kid the American outlaw was shot and killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett, in the Maxwell House at Fort Sumner, in New Mexico.

1902 : The Campanile in St Mark’s Square, Venice collapsed, which also demolished the Loggetta.

1911 : Harry Atwood the exhibition pilot for the Wright brothers, landed his aeroplane on the South Lawn of the White House, in Washington, D.C., where he was greeted by President Taft, after the flight from Boston.

1913 : Gerald Ford the 38th President of the United States was born Leslie Lynch King Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska, USA (died in 2006).

1918 : Ingmar Bergman the Swedish film director was born Ernst Ingmar Bergman in Uppsala, Sweden (died in 2007 aged 89).

1933 : Adolf Hitler abolished all German political parties, except for the Nazi party, in a decree called the Gleichschaltung.

1946 : John Wood the Australian actor was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

1947 : John Blackman the Australian radio and television presenter was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Official website : blackman.com.au

1951 : Ferrari had their 1st Formula One grand prix win at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

1960 : Jane Goodall arrived at the Gombe Stream Reserve in Tanzania to start her study of chimpanzees in the wild.

1965 : The 1st close-up photos of another planet were taken by Mariner 4 on a flyby of Mars. The photographs of Mars took about 6 hours to be sent to Earth.

1983 : Mario Bros. video game was released in Japan, which was the start of the popular Super Mario Bros franchise around the world.

2000s / 21st century history on the 14th of July

2002 : Jacques Chirac the French president escaped an assassination attempt during the Bastille Day parade at Champs-Élysées, in Paris, France.

2015 : NASA’s New Horizons probe made the 1st flyby of Pluto, which completed the initial survey of the Solar System.

2016 : Bastille Day truck attack in Nice, France. A man drove a truck into crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais, resulting in the deaths of 86 people, and 434 injured, before he was shot dead by police during an exchange of gunfire.
