1717 : MARiA THERESA the Austrian ruler was born Maria Theresa Walburga Amalia Christina in Vienna, Austria. She was the only female ruler of the Habsburg dominions, and had a 40-year reign from 1740 until she died in 1780 aged 63.

1993 : Stefan Kraft the Austrian ski jumper was born in Schwarzach im Pongau, Austria. He became one of the most successful ski jumpers in the world after he won the Ski Jumping World Cup and Ski Flying World Cup overall titles, both twice. Stefan Kraft has held the ski flying world record of 253.5 metres (832 feet) since 2017.
1995 : Alison Hargreaves became the first woman to conquer Mount Everest without oxygen or the help from Sherpas. The 33 year old British mother died 3 months later while descending from the summit of K2, on the 13th August 1995.
