1800s / the 19th century on the 12th of April
1861 : American Civil War began, when Confederate shore batteries under General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay. During the next 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4,000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort. The civil war finished 4 years later.
1900s / the 20th century on the 12th of April
1934 : The strongest surface wind gust in the world was recorded at 231 miles per hour (371 kilometres per hour) on the summit of Mount Washington, New Hampshire, USA. The record has since been surpassed.
1932 : Tiny Tim the American singer and ukulele player was born Herbert Butros Khaury in Manhattan, New York City, USA (died in 1996 aged 64).
1937 : The 1st jet engine designed to power an aircraft was ground-tested by Sir Frank Whittle, at Rugby, England.
1940 : Herbie Hancock the American musician was born Herbert Jeffrey Hancock in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
1945 : U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt died in office.
1946 : Ed O’Neill the American actor was born Edward Leonard O’Neill in Youngstown, Ohio, USA.
1947 : David Letterman the American television host was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
1950 : David Cassidy the American singer and actor was born in Manhattan, New York City, USA (died in 2017 aged 67).
1955 : The polio vaccine was declared safe and effective, after it was developed by Dr. Jonas Salk.
1956 : Andy Garcia the Cuban-American actor was born in Havana, Cuba.
1961 : The 1st human traveled into outer space. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin the pilot of Vostok 1 achieved the major milestone in the Space Race, with the completion of one orbit of Earth.
1974 : Belinda Emmett the Australian actress was born in Gosford, New South Wales, Australia (died in 2006 aged 32).
1980 : Brian McFadden the Irish singer-songwriter was born in Dublin, Ireland.
1981 : Space Shuttle Columbia was launched for the first time.
1992 : The Euro Disney Resort officially opened.
1999 : United States President Bill Clinton was cited for contempt of court for giving “intentionally false statements” in a civil lawsuit. He was later fined and disbarred.
2000s / the 21st century on the 12th of April
2010 : Merano derailment rail accident killed 9 people in South Tyrol, Italy, and injured 28 others.
