1962 : The first prisoners escaped from the Alcatraz Island federal prison. The 3 inmates, Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence prepared papier-mâché heads to resemble themselves in their beds, then broke out of the main prison building, and departed in an improvised inflatable raft.
1963 : Thích Quảng Đức the Buddhist monk burned himself to death with gasoline on a Saigon intersection in South Vietnam, to protest the lack of religious freedom.
1963 : John F. Kennedy addressed Americans from the Oval Office to propose the Civil Rights Act of 1964, to revolutionize American society with a guarantee of equal access to public facilities, put an end to segregation in education, and guarantee federal protection for voting rights.
1979 : John Wayne the American actor died aged 72, after battling cancer for more than a decade. John Wayne was born Marion Morrison on the 26th May 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, and moved to Glendale, California, as a child. He was a football star at Glendale High School, before he found work as a movie studio laborer, where he befriended director John Ford.
