1953 : Leon Spinks the American boxer was born in St. Louis, Missouri, USA (died in 2021 aged 67).

1960 : To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was published for the first time, in the United States.

1962 : First transatlantic satellite television transmission was conducted as a test broadcast. 12 days later the first public satellite television signal was relayed from Europe to North America via the Telstar satellite, across the Atlantic ocean, on 23 July 1962

1962 : NASA announced lunar orbit rendezvous as the means to land astronauts on the Moon, and return them to Earth, during Project Apollo.

1964 : Chris Cornell the American singer, songwriter, and musician was born Christopher John Boyle in Seattle, Washington, USA (died in 2017 aged 52 from suicide). He was best known as the lead singer and guitarist in Soundgarden and Audioslave, rock bands. Official website : ChrisCornell.com

1971 : Copper mines in Chile were nationalized.

1972 : The 1st chess game between Bobby Fischer & Boris Spassky started at the World Chess Championship. The last game started on the 31st August, but was adjourned after 40 moves, with the resigning of Spassky on the following day, without resuming play. Fischer won the match 12½ – 8½, and became the 11th undisputed world champion.

1973 : Varig Flight 820 Boeing 707 crashed near Paris, in France, during an emergency landing 4 kilometres from Orly Airport, due to smoke in the cabin from a fire in a lavatory, caused by a smoker. The crash caused the deaths of 123 of the 134 people on board the aircraft. The FAA banned smoking in airplane lavatories as a response to the crash.

1975 : Lil’ Kim the American rapper was born Kimberly Denise Jones in New York City, USA.

1979 : SKYLAB, America’s first space station was destroyed as it re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean, with debris landing about 480 km (300 miles) east of Perth, in Western Australia, between Esperance and Rawlinna. 24 pieces of Skylab were found at a home in Esperance, Western Australia.

1983 : TAME airline Boeing 737-200 crashed near Cuenca, in Ecuador, resulting in the deaths of all 119 people on board.

1989 : Laurence Olivier the English actor died aged 82 (born in 1907).

1991 : Nigeria Airways Flight 2120 crashed in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, resulting in the deaths of all 261 people on board the aircraft, which was the deadliest aviation disaster involving a Canadian airline.
