1846 : Elias Howe was granted a patent for the sewing machine, using a lockstitch design.
1897 : The 1st person was arrested for drunk driving. George Smith a 25 year old London taxi driver became the first person ever to be arrested for drunk driving, after he crashed his taxi cab into a building. He pleaded guilty and was fined 25 shillings.
1898 : Empress Elisabeth of Austria was assassinated by Luigi Lucheni.
1900s / 20th century history on the 10th of September
1919 : Austria and the Allies signed the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye recognizing the independence of Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Yugoslavia.
1936 : The First World Individual Motorcycle Speedway Championships was held at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
1945 : José Feliciano, the Puerto Rican singer and musician, was born José Monserrate Feliciano García, in Lares, Puerto Rico. official website : JoseFeliciano.com
1946 : Sister Teresa Bojaxhiu of the Loreto Sisters’ Convent claimed to have heard the call of God, while riding a train to Darjeeling, directing her to leave the convent and help the poor while living among them. She later became known as Mother Teresa.
1960 : At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Abebe Bikila became the first sub-Saharan African to win a gold medal, when he won the marathon in bare feet.
1961 : Italian Grand Prix crash caused the death of German Formula One driver Wolfgang von Trips and 13 spectators who are hit by his Ferrari.
1976 : Aircraft crash : A British Airways Hawker Siddeley Trident and an Inex-Adria DC-9 collided near Zagreb, Yugoslavia, killing 176 people.
2000s / 21st century history on the 10th of September
2001 : Charles Ingram cheated his way to win one million pounds on the British version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.
2002 : Switzerland joined the United Nations.
2003 : Anna Lindh, the foreign minister of Sweden, was fatally stabbed while shopping, and died the following day.
2008 :The Large Hadron Collider at CERN, known as the biggest scientific experiment in history, was powered up in Geneva, Switzerland.
2022 : King Charles III was formally proclaimed as monarch at a meeting of the Accession Council in St James’s Palace, after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
