1212 – The most severe of several early fires of London burnt most of the city to the ground.

1553 – Lady Jane Grey took the throne of England.

1856 – Nikola Tesla the Serbian-American physicist and engineer was born in  Smiljan, Lika, in the Austrian Empire, which is present day Croatia (d. 1943 aged 86).

1869 – Gävle in Sweden, was largely destroyed in a fire, causing 80% of its 10,000 residents to become homeless.

1913 – The temperature in Death Valley, California, hit 57 °C (134 °F), the highest temperature ever to be recorded on Earth.

1921 – Belfast’s Bloody Sunday: 16 people were killed and 161 houses destroyed during rioting and gun battles in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

1938 – Howard Hughes began his 91-hour airplane flight around the world which set a new record.

1943 – Arthur Ashe the American tennis player was born in Richmond, Virginia (d. 1993 aged 49).

1949 – Greg Kihn the American singer-songwriter and guitarist was born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

1962 – Telstar, the world’s 1st communications satellite was launched into orbit.

1997 – Scientists in London reported the findings of the DNA analysis of a Neanderthal skeleton which supported the “out of Africa theory” of human evolution, placing an “African Eve” at 100,000 to 200,000 years ago.

2002 – Peter Paul Rubens’ painting The Massacre of the Innocents was sold for £49.5 million (US$76.2 million) at a Sotheby’s auction, to Lord Thomson.
