1519 ~ Ferdinand Magellan’s 5 ships set sail from Seville to circumnavigate the globe. The Basque 2nd in command Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the expedition after Magellan’s death in the Philippines.
1675 ~ The foundation stone of the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London, England was laid.
1793 ~ The Musée du Louvre was officially opened in Paris, France.
1821 ~ Missouri was admitted as the 24th U.S. state.
