800s / the 9th century on the 10th of April

837 : Halley’s Comet mades the closest approach to Earth at a distance of 5.1 million kilometres (3.2 million miles).

1700s / the 18th century on the 10th of April

1710 : The first ever law regulating COPYRiGHT, known as the Statute of Anne, commenced in Great Britain. It remained in use until 1842 when it was repealed by the Copyright Act 1842.

1800s / the 19th century on the 10th of April

1815 : The Mount Tambora volcano started a three-month-long eruption, which lasted until the 15th July. The eruption resulted in the death of 71,000 people, and affected Earth’s climate for the following 2 years.

1866 : ASPCA : The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in New York City by by philanthropist Henry Bergh. He was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to a diplomatic post at the Russian court of Czar Alexander II. While he  was there he was horrified to witness work horses beaten by their peasant drivers. En route back to America, in 1865 , his visit to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in London awakened his determination to secure a charter not only to incorporate the ASPCA but to exercise the power to arrest and prosecute violators of the law. 1912 : RMS Titanic departed from Southampton in England on its maiden voyage, which became its only voyage after sinking 5 days later on the 15th April.

1959 : Brian Setzer the American musician from the Stray Cats rockabilly band was born in Massapequa, New York, USA.

1973 : Invicta International Airlines Flight 435 crashed in a snowstorm while approaching Basel in Switzerland, resulting in the death of 108 people.
