May 29th ~ This Day in History video by History.com ~ 1953 : Hillary and Tenzing reached Everest summit : Edmund Hillary (New Zealand) and Tenzing Norgay (Sherpa from Nepal) both become the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest at 11:30am on the 29th May 1953. Mount Everest is 29,035 feet above sea level, and the highest point on Earth.
